Instagram is designed to use with smartphones, hence limited to only one option to upload your content. User’s often take pictures on their dedicated camera or want to get them edited on a desktop before sharing. For this users have to transfer the images from their Mac / PC to their smartphones to get them uploaded in Instagram. But now here’s an app that helps you upload to Instagram directly from your Mac or PC desktop.
Windowed for Mac & Windows: upload to Instagram directly from your desktop
Created by photographer and programmer Felix Sun, Windowed is essentially a tiny mobile browser that lets you log into Instagram’s website. It is 100% free and the creator has shared it’s source code here.
Windowed will be a useful tool for photographers as well. Now they can upload to Instagram directly from their work station after doing essential color correction or retouching. A more easy work flow.
Instagram already has the functionality to upload photos through a web browser, but sadly this feature is locked to mobile web browsers only. When you open up the same website on your desktop browser and you won’t see the upload options. Windowed overcomes this issue by pretending to be a mobile browser, allowing you to visit the Instagram mobile website directly from your Mac or Windows PC.
All of your interactions including login are done directy with Instagram. Windowed doesn’t have access to your account so you don’t have to worry about giving a 3rd party your account information.
You can download the app from this download page. The Mac .dmg is 44 MB and Windows .exe is MB.
After installing the app enter your Instagram credentials to log in. Once you’re logged in, click the camera button in the icon bar to start a photo upload. Filters and adding captions are same as that of the smarphone app.
